Designer Profile: Athina Moutsatsos, Home Styles by Athina

October 17, 2017

As a kid, Athina would constantly rearrange her bedroom furniture to make it feel like she was creating a completely new room. Today, as a Certified Interior Decorator and the owner of Home Styles by Athina, she still enjoys doing that for her clients, albeit on a much grander scale.

“Design and decoration is about aesthetics, yes, but what I love and think is more important is the feeling clients get when they walk into their dream spaces,” she says.

Athina’s favourite spaces to design are living rooms and kitchens because “that’s where life happens,” and she is a big fan of creatively incorporating wallpaper in multiple rooms in a home. Get to know more about this exciting young designer’s personal style in our Q&A below.

What colour would you love to work with more and why?

Forest Green (2047-10) – because deep, rich greens are such a timeless classic. It reminds me of historical Victorian décor. I love bold colours and I’m making it my mission to bring them back. Enough with grey already!

What inspires your colour choice for a design project?

I usually look around a client’s home and see what colours they naturally lean toward. Then I use that colour as inspiration – whether it be to use more of that colour, use it in different hues, or use its complimentary colours.

Name one colour “rule” that is meant to be broken?

"Blue and green should never be seen, except inside the washing machine. False. Break it."

Is there any overlooked surface you think should be painted to bring colour to a space?

The kitchen table. Holy moly, how boring are kitchen tables? I say paint those babies! Or, if that’s a little too bold, try painting the chairs.

Is there a colour combination that works surprisingly well together – even if it really shouldn’t?

Pink and green! I love this combination so much. It’s perfect for a powder room, home office, laundry room, mudroom, bedroom, living room… I think you see where I’m going with this.

Can you give us a professional design tip for choosing the perfect colour palette?

Keep it simple. You don’t need to paint every single room a completely different colour. Use colours that complement one another. This provides cohesiveness throughout the home and still allows you to use bold or accent colours within specific spaces.

Lastly, in your opinion, why should people hire a professional designer?

There are an infinite number of possibilities when it comes to decoration and design. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed and bogged down by them, making it tempting to throw in the towel in frustration. Professional decorators and designers are trained to narrow down options and hone in on what their client needs. We guide clients, work with them to make decisions and give them their dream spaces.
